The founder of Virgin Group, Richard Branson, published an article on his LinkedIn profile yesterday encouraging readers to take the risk and find a career that fulfils them.
“One of the things I’m most thankful for as I wake each morning is having a job that I love,” writes Branson. “Not only that, it’s incredibly rewarding to be surrounded by people who also love what they do. Virgin is a company that prides itself on a happy, motivated workforce.”
Branson goes on to address the fact that many people are unfortunately working in roles they are not passionate about. A big reason for this he says is that people are scared to take that step and quit, especially when they are in a well-paid and highly respected position.
Changing jobs or career paths is a risk but as Branson explains “you’ll never know if you don’t give it a try.” He then links to the Randstad "Becoming Me" video which features four professionals sharing their experiences on how they reached their dream jobs.
The short film created by Ben Anthony as part of Randstad’s “How I became” series has some powerful moments, one interviewee says “Fairly soon into the job, I started to realise that wasn’t the job for me, I wasn’t working as hard as I’d normally work to achieve what people were asking of me.”
As Branson explains getting yourself out of this type of situation is difficult but mentions that people might be surprised to learn that there is help available for those putting themselves out there.
“It doesn’t have to be a case of struggling along by yourself,” says Branson.
After pulling on examples within his own company, Branson concludes with the following moral. “Never give up on your dreams! A fulfilling career is waiting for those brave enough to find it.”
