The app economy and the boom in the London Silicon Roundabout area have led to a big increase in the number of UK IT companies within the last two years. The growth has strengthened the country's position as a genuine major tech hub, with more than 300,000 businesses now operating in the sector – a 14% increase from two years ago.

With general industry growth currently being measured at around 8%, the sector obviously offers a host of potential for workers looking to find jobs in an over-performing industry .

Graham Jenner, a director at NoPalaver;, said: “New media entrepreneurs are riding the next wave of technological innovation to establish a raft of high-growth startup IT businesses clustering around tech hubs."

The growth has also seen the number of people out of work decrease by 48,000 to 2.47 million in the quarter leading up to September, according to the ONS.

Interestingly, many employers are still observing a skills gap, with the area still offering a huge number of unfulfilled vacancies. At the last count, there were 4,700 unfulfilled jobs in the tech city area, according to jobs search engine <a target="_blank" href="

Government backing for the Tech City region appears to continue to have a positive effect, according to Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter; however, there is still a definite gap in skills, with specific coding skills such as SQL, Ruby, HTML and Python all in strong demand.
