Many believe that a career in construction consists of bricks and mortar. Although physical labour still remains a key component of many jobs in the industry, there are positions that don’t require you to get your hands dirty or in fact wear a hard hat.

The breadth of job roles in the construction industry is huge. If you enjoy working with your hands you could become a joiner installing wooden fixtures, an electrician fixing circuits, an ironworker, or any number of other roles. Alternatively, you could opt for more of an office-based position, working as an architect, engineer or urban planner.

Getting started in the industry, therefore, varies massively depending on your chosen career path. Many labourer roles are entry level positions however, if you require upskilling there are a variety of apprenticeships and trainee schemes available. Other roles such as engineering, are likely to require a relevant degree. If you’ve got tangible experience in the industry make sure your CV highlights your achievements with facts and figures.

Teamwork is an extremely valuable and transferable skill within the industry, construction projects are rarely solo affairs, so the ability to work effectively with others is a must. Communication and collaboration with your colleagues will help you go a long way within a career in construction.
