Challenge:

A Year 11 student, diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and dyslexia, had been permanently excluded from school in Year 9 following a violent incident. Traditional approaches to re-engage the student, like blended learning and work packs, had failed.

Goal:

The goal was to help the student re-engage with education, prepare for and pass GCSE exams, and transition back to full-time classroom attendance. The ultimate aim was to provide the student with the tools and support needed to succeed academically and reach their full potential.

Solution:

Randstad, recognising the unique needs of the student, worked closely with the family to design a personalised support plan:

Tailored GCSE preparation: A dedicated tutor provided 15 hours of weekly support, focusing on preparing the student for GCSE exams in Maths and English.
In-home exam invigilation: To address the school's limitations, Randstad arranged for the student's GCSE exams to be invigilated at home, ensuring a supportive and familiar environment.
Gradual transition back to school: Guided by the tutor, the student transitioned back to school gradually, starting with one hour per week of classroom attendance and increasing the time spent in class at agreed intervals.

Results:

The personalised approach yielded remarkable results:

Academic success: The student successfully passed their GCSEs in Maths and English, demonstrating the effectiveness of tailored support and the dedication of the tutor.
Successful reintegration: After 18 months of dedicated support, the student was attending full-time classroom lessons, demonstrating a remarkable return to mainstream education.
Increased independence: In the final month of the academic year, the student attended school independently, showcasing a significant milestone in their journey back to mainstream education.
Empowered future: The successful completion of GCSEs opened doors to further education and employment opportunities. The student went on to pursue a successful apprenticeship, showcasing the transformative power of personalised support and individualised learning.
