what do you do in a care job?
Typically, in healthcare jobs you work to create a comfortable environment for patients and to assist them in their daily activities in different healthcare settings ranging from hospitals to clinics and residential homes. Healthcare assistants, for example, will have to be ready and willing to work alongside healthcare professionals in different working environments such as surgery, maternity, community, and mental health to ensure patients' safety, comfort, and first hand care.
Healthcare assistants have the same roles and duties, but they differ depending on the specific work environment. Therefore, they can be classified according to where they work, such as:
- maternity
- surgery
- mental health
- community
- the general population
Others work in nursing homes and patients’ homes as opposed to hospitals and clinics. These jobs can be classified as:
- birth assistant
- patient care assistant
- nursing assistant
- psychiatric assistant
-
what qualifications do you need to work in care?
Becoming a Healthcare Assistant is a great entry into the world of healthcare, with minimal qualifications.
There are no set requirements for entering this field but the following qualifications will improve your application:
- GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) in English and Maths
- a health care qualification
- paid or unpaid experience in health or social care
The skills that employers seek for a role like this include good communication skills, organisation skills and proactiveness as well as the ability to follow instructions accurately.
On a personal level, you need to demonstrate that you can act with discretion and trust. You will be working with vulnerable people and your sensitivity to their privacy and need for respect is paramount.
Above all, you need to be patient, committed to caring and have a great sense of humour.
As well as the skills and qualifications mentioned above, a apprenticeship could also help you to get your foot in the door. An apprenticeship can help you combine practical training with studying.
Some care assistants join the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) as health practitioner members where they can attend training and networking events. -
