Job overview:
The function of the Bed Manager is to oversee all aspects of bed management within CNTW Hospitals. The aim is to balance the access demands of the wards and those of urgent/non-urgent need for available beds. This will include outsourcing beds for the Trust if demand exceeds capacity including specialist beds e.g. PICU, Tier 4, Eating Disorder beds and other specialist beds as required.
The aim of the Bed Managers role is to support clinical teams to optimise the continuum of care by assisting the management of the patient effectively throughout the whole of their care episode, from admission into the hospital and back into the community. Essentially the post holder will liaise with Home Treatment, inpatient, community and medical staff to co-ordinate and optimise the Trust's inpatient bed utilisation.
Main duties of the job
- Accepting bed requests once Gatekept by Home Treatment - clinically ensuring all alternatives have been considered, making and supporting suggestions re alternatives to hospital have been considered.
- Bed Requests ensure that risk assessment; Infection Control and Safeguarding considerations have been made
- Maintaining accurate bed management handover reports as well as providing Silver reports daily and a bed plan once weekly.
- Supporting completion of out of area bed referrals
- Daily review of handover with CRHT leads
- Liaison with private providers where BCHFT patients have been placed i.e. out of area PICU / acute bed, Signposting to care coordination and ensuring quality of service being provided.
- Liaison with Home Treatment and MHLS teams
- Initial point of escalation; followed by which escalation to Patient Flow Manager / Deputy Director and seniors

Essential and Desirable
Essential criteria
- Band -6 CPN Community Psychiatric Nurse
- Band- 5 RMN Registered Mental Health Nurse with ward experience can also apply
Desirable criteria
- Previous Bed Management experience
- Previous MHLS / HTT / Ward experience
- Previous experience in community setting
